Leaves and wind have long been a focus in my work. Here, a heart-shaped leaf is repeated again and again in various directions creating a cascading downward flow. Each leaf is stitched by hand using the Japanese embroidery sashiko technique in a rainbow of autumnal colored threads against a deep wine textured solid. The fabric on the side borders – that feels like an oncoming storm – is one of Mickey Lawler’s magical metallic hand-painted “Skydyes” from the 90’s. The top and bottom border fabric is a vintage Hoffman Bali batik floral. This stitched work has a middle layer of batting. It is machine quilted in a single line where the center meets the borders.
