Crimson mountain-top
A single leaf drifts and hangs
Wind out of nowhere*
This quilt is part of a series exploring the natural landscape within the context of monthly seasonal changes. The inspiration for this particular work, representing November, grew out of a visual memory while visiting Kyoto, Japan. While many people know how special the cherry blossoms are in Japan, of equal excitement to the Japanese are the deep red maple leaves across the western hills and valleys of Kyoto. Millions of visitors flock to see the glorious fire-y vista every year. The intuitively pieced design (no pre sketch or plan) began with a few hand-painted leaves from a workshop I taught. The swirling hand-quilted lines call to mind the movement of the wind. Of the five I completed so far, only this one (November) and March remain.
*My dear friend and writer, Marian Wolbers, gifted me with a lovely haiku poem.
