Indigo Flowers with striped border…The interesting thing about this fabric is not whether it is plum blossom or cherry blossom, but the fact that the indigo is poured into the center of a resisted section by hand, using a container that reminds me of the watering can my grandmother used for her violets. So, left and right hand, pouring simultaneously, and then with a foot pump pulling the excess dye through and flowing onto the floor. So archaic. I first witnessed this when Blue and White took me to a family run “factory” around 1989 with my tour group. I thought I was back in the 1700s. Not many factories like this left—you would have to ask Amy Katoh how many…The white (fake ivory) elephant is a part of my mom’s broken earring and is considered a symbol of luck and strength in various cultures and traditions. The beads are from a broken key ring bought at The Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, thus a good pairing, I thought.
