Blue Jay—It’s always about this time of year, I am awakened at dawn by the blue jays yakking. It’s annoying until I remember how beautiful they are in flight. Shown here with green and blue border, double-bead bauble, baby bird egg and paper thread for nest building. The last two made by the hand and spirit of Susan Byrd—that’s really her name, a fellow exchange student to the same town in Japan 15 years after me, to Shiroishi. There she studied paper making and weaving with paper to make cloth.
