Lavender Camellia…this cotton crepe, or “chirimen” in Japanese came to the USA quilt world as a precious and delicate commodity in small precut pieces wrapped in cellophane. Loosely woven and not so easy to sew with, this is a sister to the original SILK crepe chirimen used in kimono back to the 18th Century which designer Naomi Itaya collected and based her big floral designs on—and which changed the way we make quilts. An enamel pin I wore in high school is banked by two rows of sashiko. An ivory hand pendant and a tiny bell complete this amulet. Second photo shows back and better view of fabric texture.
