I fussy-cut a 3” square of fabric from a piece Japanese katazome (hand-stencil-dyed) summer kimono fabric. The feature is a dragonfly (tombo in Japanaese) a design typically worn by a young boy at an outdoor summer festival. Bordered with a medley of solid, stripes, shibori and wovens – all in blue. I sewed on the blue hiragana character of て (pronounced “teh” & means “hand”) on the lower right, hand-quilted all around the central image, and added a blue & white button on the lower left for balance.
