“Nui Nui Nui” There is no meaning to this—just that the design started to look like letters. The green on black center fabric was hand-printed line by line with carved erasers in the Williamsport Old Jail Studio of my oldest friend, Deb Porter. We played our way through Jean Ray Laury’s 1997 publication of Imagery on Fabric (the reprint is still available), an amazing book that opened the door to contemporary quilting as we know it. The borders of this piece are actually what I call “black hole” indigo. A few beads break up the horizontal rhythm. The wooden calligraphy below is from the Asakusa “Red Lantern” Temple in Tokyo, where I took all 30 of my tour groups as a 1st cultural stop in Japan & where I visited as many more times on my own.
